Toronto Blue Jays all-star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. broke through his offensive struggles on Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants with a home run in the ninth inning.
The home run was Guerrero’s first deep shot since June 18 and only his fifth home run of the season.
Toronto defeated the Giants 10-0 in Wednesday’s game that also saw all-star pitcher Dylan Cease throw eight no-hit innings before giving up a hit leading off the ninth.
Guerrero is in the first season of a first season of a 14-year, $500 million contract and his having one of his worst career offensive seasons of his career, batting .262 with five home runs and 37 RBI.
His 2026 campaign is a far cry from his best season where he hit for .311 with 48 home runs and 111 RBI in 2021 where he finished second in American League MVP voting.
The 27-year-old infielder was key for the Blue Jays in the playoffs last season, winning the ALCS MVP and hitting .397 with eight home runs and 15 RBI in 18 games during the postseason.
Guerrero was named to his sixth All-Star Game earlier this week but elected not to participate in order to rest a back injury that has kept him out of the lineup for periods of time this season.
The Blue Jays sit third in the AL East with a 44-49 record and are 11 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for top spot. The Rays play the New York Yankees later on Wednesday.
