Jose Berrios is on the shelf.
The Toronto Blue Jays placed the 31-year-old righty on the injured list with inflammation in his elbow.
Berrios last worked out of the bullpen on Wednesday night in a 7-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox. The Bayamon, Puerto Rico native surrendered three hits and two earned runs in two innings of work.
Berrios was sent to the bullpen from the rotation last Friday and told MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson he wasn’t thrilled about the move.
“Honestly, I don’t feel happy talking about it,” Berrios said. “Putting that aside, I put my team first. I was able to be out there to help my team and that’s the way I see it.”
Berrios is in his 10th big league season and fifth with the Jays. He finishes his regular season with a mark of 9-5 with an earned run average of 4.17 and WHIP of 1.301 in 166.0 innings of work over 31 appearances.
In a corresponding move, the team is recalling Paxton Schultz.
The Blue Jays (90-68) are level atop the AL East with the New York Yankees with four games to play. The Jays hold the tiebreaker between the two teams. They wrap up a three-game set with the Boston Red Sox (87-71) later on Thursday. The Red Sox will clinch a playoff spot with a victory.
