The Toronto Blue Jays called up outfielder Davis Schneider and pitcher Adam Macko on Thursday ahead of their series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays.
In a corresponding move, outfielder Sean Keys was sent down to Triple-A Buffalo and left-handed pitcher Patrick Corbin was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left teres major strain.
The 27-year-old Schneider has struggled mightily while with the Blue Jays this season after starting the campaign with the team. He hit .153 with three home runs in 49 games, primarily coming off the bench as the season progressed and his playing time dwindled.
Schneider was sent down to Triple-A on June 27, and his production skyrocketed from that point. In 30 games with the Bisons, Schneider hit .253 with a shocking .504 on-base percentage, thanks to 39 walks in 129 plate appearances. He also hit five home runs in that span.
Macko is a Canadian lefty that has a 5.03 earned-run average in 19 appearances (one start) with the Blue Jays this year.
Corbin, 36, was a revelation for the Blue Jays rotation when filling in with a bunch of regular starters on the IL in April. Signed off the street, Corbin held a 2-1 record with a 3.86 ERA over his first nine starts with the club. As starters began to get healthy and return, Corbin was shifted to the bullpen, and his production began to wane.
He heads to the IL with a 5.51 ERA over 80 innings pitched in 19 appearances.
The Blue Jays (46-56) look to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the division-leading Rays when they battle in a Thursday matinee at the Rogers Centre.
