The Toronto Blue Jays have placed starting pitcher Max Scherzer on the 15-day injured list with right forearm tendonitis and left ankle inflammation, the team announced Monday.

Right-handed pitcher Chase Lee has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move.

Scherzer, 41, hits the IL after allowing seven earned runs over just 2.1 innings on Friday night against the Cleveland Guardians. It was the third time in four starts that he had been unable to get out of the third inning.

The 19-year veteran has struggled mightily to begin the 2026 season, carrying an earned-run average of 9.64 through 18.2 innings pitched in five starts this season.

Scherzer had previously left his start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 6 with right forearm tendonitis, but was able to make each of his next three starts before going on the injured list Monday.

Lee, 27, was acquired by the Blue Jays in December via trade with the Detroit Tigers.

The 6-foot righty impressed in Spring Training, throwing 6.1 innings of scoreless ball across six games, allowing two hits while striking out four.

He pitched in 32 games for the Tigers last season, his first in the big leagues, and recorded a 4.10 ERA and 1.098 WHIP with 36 strikeouts and nine walks in 37.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen.

The Blue Jays (12-15) begin a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Monday night, sending Dylan Cease to the hill against Ranger Suarez.
