Blue Jays scratch Barger with right elbow soreness

Published:

The Toronto Blue Jays scratched outfielder Addison Barger from Sunday’s lineup because of right elbow soreness, the team announced prior to first pitch.

Barger was originally scheduled to bat lead off and play right field. Ernie Clement will now lead off, with Jesus Sanchez taking Barger’s place in right field and Myles Straw coming into the lineup to play left.

The team did not say how Barger sustained the injury. However, Barger did make a long throw from right field to home plate during the second inning of Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels to cut down Jorge Soler and end the inning. Barger’s throw was measured at 101.2 mph, which was the Blue Jays’ fastest assist during the Statcast era.

As MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson reports, Barger had a big ice wrap on his right elbow like pitchers often wear after games when he came out to meet the media after Saturday’s 14-1 victory.

Barger made his return from an ankle injury on Saturday that had kept him out since April 5. The outfielder injured both ankles in a game against the Chicago White Sox and went 0-for-3 with two walks in his return Saturday.

All in all, the 26-year-old is slashing .045/.219/.091 with zero home runs and two RBI in nine games this season.

The Jays will wrap up their series with the Angels Sunday afternoon before hosting the Tampa Bay Rays in a three-game set beginning Monday.
