Clement not in Blue Jays’ starting lineup for second straight game

Published:

Second baseman Ernie Clement is not in the starting lineup for the second straight day as the Toronto Blue Jays wrap up their series with the Houston Astros.

Clement also did not start Friday or Saturday in the series against the Cubs over the weekend in Chicago, but played the full game and went 1-for-3 with a walk in Monday’s series opener with the Astros.

Manager John Schneider told reporters Tuesday that Clement was not in the starting lineup because of a hip injury. Schneider did say Clement would be available off the bench if needed, however he did not play in Toronto’s 11-inning loss to Houston.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed a nice season at the plate, slashing .293/.314/.439 with seven home runs and 28 RBI in 76 games. He also has a league-leading 20 doubles and two stolen bases.

The Blue Jays (39-40) will attempt to get back to .500 Wednesday evening with right-hander Trey Yesavage going to the hill against righty Mike Burrows.
