Alek Manoah’s time with the Los Angeles Angels is at an end.
The team announced the release of the 28-year-old righty on Wednesday.
Manoah had been with the team’s Triple-A affiliate Salt Lake Bees.
A native of Lakeland, FL, Manoah had made three appearances for the team at the big league level this season after signing as a free agent in the offseason. He had a 9.82 earned run average and 2.182 WHIP over 7.1 innings of work. He struck out five batters and walked eight.
Manoah had been struggling mightily with the Bees. In 10 starts, Manoah had a 1-7 record with a 16.14 ERA and 2.837 WHIP over 35.0 IP. He had surrendered 61 earned runs.
The 11th overall pick of the 2019 MLB Amateur Draft out of West Virginia, Manoah made his big league debut with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021, finishing ninth in American League Rookie of the Year voting. He had a breakout campaign in 2022 when he was named an All-Star and finished third in AL Cy Young Award voting after a 16-7 record with a 2.24 ERA and 0.992 WHIP over 196.1 IP in 31 starts.
Manoah was unable to replicate that performance, struggling with command and health in his final seasons with the Blue Jays. Demoted to Triple-A in the summer of 2023, Manoah failed to report to the Buffalo Bisons. Returning to the majors in 2024, Manoah was injured in just his fifth start of the season and would go on to require UCL reconstructive surgery. He would never pitch for the Blue Jays again, designated for assignment in late September 2025.
