The Toronto Blue Jays will be getting their first look at part of the return from the Kevin Gausman trade on Friday.
The team recalled outfielder Brett Bateman from Triple-A Buffalo. Bateman, 24, was acquired from the Chicago Cubs last week. A native of St. Paul, MN, Bateman has appeared in two games for the Bisons and made a spectacular catch during Thursday’s game.
Bateman arrives as Luis Urias heads to the injured list with a quad strain.
Urias, 29, exited the team’s 3-2 extra-innings loss to the Cubs on Thursday in obvious discomfort. In the fourth inning, Urias hit a ball to the wall and began to limp as he turned first in an attempt to stretch it out into a double. He was safe and remained in the game for the time being, but did not come out for the bottom half of the frame with Josh Smith taking over.
Acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier in the season, Urias has an .803 OPS through 26 games with the Jays. The Magdalena de Kino, Mexico native is in his ninth season, having also suited up for the Athletics, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers and San Diego Padres.
In another move, the team designated outfielder Rudy Martin Jr. for assignment, clearing him from the 40-man roster.
