The Toronto Blue Jays activated George Springer off of the 10-day injured list for Wednesday’s series finale against the Boston Red Sox.
Eloy Jimenez was been designated for assignment to make room for Springer on the active roster.
Springer, 36, did not start Wednesday’s matinee, but came on as a pinch-hitter for rookie Yohendrick Piñango with two runners on in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The 13-year veteran swung at the first pitch he saw from Red Sox lefty Jovani Moran, lining it back up the middle for an RBI single to extend Toronto’s lead to 6-1.
He would fly out to left field in his next at-bat in the bottom of the seventh, but the Blue Jays would go onto win 8-1 in the series rubber match.
A four-time All-Star, Springer had missed Toronto’s past 15 games prior to Wednesday with a left big toe fracture after he fouled a pitch off his left foot against the Minnesota Twins on April 11.
Jimenez, 29, posted a slash line of .290/.343/.290 with three runs batted in across 12 games for the Blue Jays this season.
A former top prospect of the Chicago White Sox, Jimenez was initially recalled from the from Triple-A Buffalo when Springer was placed on the IL on April 12.
He signed a minor-league deal with Toronto before the start of spring training.
Toronto (14-16) now heads onto the road for a four-game series against the Minnesota Twins.
