San Diego Padres reliever Robert Suarez has opted out of his contract and is now a free agent, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Suarez, 34, had two years and $16 million remaining on the original contract.
Suarez led the NL with 40 saves last season while posting a 2.97 ERA and 0.90 WHIP.
The four-year veteran has been named an All-Star in each of the past two seasons. Over that span, he has racked up 76 saves with a 2.87 ERA and 134 strikeouts over 134.2 innings.
New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger, New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz and first baseman Pete Alonso, and Boston Red Sox third baseman also opted out of their contracts on Monday to become free agents.
