Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios will not join Puerto Rico for the team’s quarterfinal match at the World Baseball Classic due to not being granted insurance coverage, according to The Athletic’s Maria Torres.
Berrios was one of several Puerto Rican players initially unable to participate in the World Baseball Classic due to insurance issues, but was expected to join his country after manager Yadier Molina said the 31-year-old starter received clearance.
Berrios has pitched for Puerto Rico in the last three WBC tournaments and heads into his 11th big league season and sixth with the Blue Jays.
He finished 2025 with a record of 9-5 in 31 outings with an earned run average of 4.17 and 1.301 WHIP over 166.0 innings pitched. He was removed from the rotation in September before being placed on the injured list -- for the first time in his career -- on Sept. 25.
Berrios was healthy enough to pitch for the Blue Jays in the postseason in October, but the team elected to keep him off the roster.
