Mike Maddux’s time with the Los Angeles Angels is at its end.
The team announced the firing of its pitching coach on Tuesday.
Bullpen coach Dom Chiti and assistant pitching coach Darryl Scott were also dismissed.
“After spending time discussing with [manager] Kurt [Suzuki] where we are as a coaching staff and where we want to go in the future, we felt it was best to make a change,” Angels interim general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement. “With seven weeks remaining, we plan to use this time to evaluate what additional steps are needed to elevate our entire pitching program and best position us for success moving forward.”
The Angels have a 4.51 team earned run average and a 1.376 WHIP, the sixth-worst mark in the league. Their 508 walks surrendered are most in the league.
A native of Dayton, OH, Maddux had a 15-year pitching career in the bigs, appearing in 472 games with the Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, Montreal Expos and Houston Astros, retiring after the 2000 season. Maddux is the older brother of Hall of Famer, Greg Maddux.
Maddux started his coaching career in 2003 with the Milwaukee Brewers before stints with the Texas Rangers, Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals. He won a World Series with the Rangers in 2023.
Maddux was on a one-year deal with the Angels.
