The New York Mets are moving into sell mode and are discussing dealing infielder Bo Bichette as well as several other players, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Heyman notes that a Bichette trade is not seen as especially likely, but the team is discussing all avenues as they begin play Friday well out of the playoff picture at 40-57, 12 games back of the final NL wild-card spot.
According to Heyman, shortstop Francisco Lindor could also be on the trade block, though like Bichette, he is more likely to stay put. Heyman lists Juan Soto, Carson Benge, Nolan McLean, A.J. Ewing and Christian Scott as players the Mets are not considering trading.
Bichette signed a three-year, $126 million contract with the Mets this past off-season that includes player opt-outs ahead of both 2027 and 2028. According to Heyman, this could complicate any deal.
However, Heyman also reports Bichette has been paid the majority of his 2026 salary due to his singing bonus from this spring.
Bichette has largely struggled in his first season in New York as he’ll enter play Friday with a .253/.297/.372 slash line to go along with 10 home runs and 51 RBI. He went 0-for-4 at the plate in Thursday’s second-half opener.
The 28-year-old joined the Mets in January after seven seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he had one of the best seasons of his career to help the team return to the World Series for the first time in 32 years.
While Bichette missed most of the month of September and the first two postseason series, he hit .348 with six RBI during the World Series, including hitting a three-run home run off Shohei Ohtani in Game 7. Unfortunately for Bichette and the Jays, the Dodgers prevailed in extra innings to repeat as champions.
Bichette is a lifetime .289 hitter across eight MLB seasons with 121 home runs and 488 RBI in 845 career regular season games.
