Schneider: Surgery is ‘on the table’ for Berrios’ elbow

Published:

Starting pitcher Jose Berrios continues to miss games for the Toronto Blue Jays, and surgery could be on the table for his injured elbow, according to manager John Schneider.

Berrios, 32, has not played this season after a stress fracture was discovered in his right elbow in Spring Training.

Schneider added that there isn’t a believe that there is any ligament damage right now.

MLB.com reporter Keegan Matheson reported on May 8 that an MRI showed Berrios showed some inflammation and “small changes to that initial injury” of a stress fracture.

The 6-foot righty reportedly met with Dr. Keith Meister on Tuesday, who is one of the most trusted surgeons in the majors and has a reputation as an elbow specialist.

Berrios has made four rehab starts in the minors, and has a 10.67 earned-run average over 14.1 innings split between Single-A Dunedin and Triple-A Buffalo.

He had a 9-5 record last season with a 4.17 earned-run average with 138 strikeouts in 31 appearances.

Berrios’s 2025 season ended in late September when he was removed from the Jays’ rotation and placed on the injured list. His decision to rehab at home rather than stay with the Jays during the World Series became a sore spot between the player and team and it was something Berrios called “a bad decision” in Spring Training.

A 10-year vet, Berrios is in his fifth season of a seven-year, $131 million contract. The pact contains a player opt-out following the 2026 season.

The Blue Jays enter Friday’s action in fourth place in the American League East with a 19-24 record and are nine and a half games behind the division leading Tampa Bay Rays.

They are getting set to begin a three-game set with the Detroit Tigers from Comerica Park in Detroit on Friday.
