The New York Yankees are moving on from Randal Grichuk, as the team announced Wednesday that they are designating the veteran outfielder for assignment.
The move is being made to open up a spot for top pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez, who will make his MLB debut in Wednesday’s game.
Grichuk, 34, has hit just .194 in 16 games this season with four doubles and no home runs.
The 13-year veteran spent four seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays from 2018 to 2021, where he was a leader in the clubhouse and hit 95 home runs over 479 games.
For his MLB career, Grichuk has hit .250 with 212 home runs in 1,376 MLB games with the St. Louis Cardinals, Blue Jays, Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels, Arizona Diamondbacks, Kansas City Royals and the Yankees.
Rodriguez, 22, is the No. 3 prospect in the Yankees system, per MLB Pipeline, and the No. 72 prospect in all of baseball. The 6-foot-4 righty has a sparkling 1.27 earned-run average in four starts at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this year.
The Yankees are the top team in the American League at 20-10, and finish a three-game set with the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.
