Red Bull’s Verstappen on pole for Singapore Grand Prix, Ferrari duo behind

Published:

Max Verstappen continued his dominance in Singapore after putting his Red Bull in pole position for Sunday's grand prix.

The Dutchman claimed victory in the sprint race earlier Saturday before crossing the line a narrow 0.054 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

Lewis Hamilton in the other Ferrari topped both sessions before finishing over a tenth behind the leader's pace.

Title leader Kimi Antonelli aborted his final lap and qualified fourth-fastest, with McLaren's Lando Norris in fifth.

This is the first pole Verstappen has taken for the Singapore Grand Prix.

"Very happy to be on pole because this is the one that I wanted," Verstappen said via PA. "We have been on a positive trend, so for us it's very special to take a pole here."

Mercedes' George Russell finished in sixth, but will start on the back of the grid due to an engine penalty. He's running a downgraded version of the car, while Antonelli is running the upgraded package.

Hamilton, who was on track to get his first pole in three years, said: "Another difficult Q3, the car was feeling so much better. I felt like she had more in her. Finding that sweet spot is very, very difficult.

"It is a really good result for us, we can hopefully work as a team tomorrow to hold on to Max and put them [Red Bull] under pressure. Who knows, we will see if we can get ahead of him."

McLaren's Oscar Piastri was down in seventh, with Alpine's Pierre Gasly behind.

Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix starts at 1 p.m. BST / 8 a.m. ET.
