Taj Gibson’s NBA playing career is at an end, but he’s not gone from the game.
The 41-year-old forward announced his retirement after 17 NBA seasons on Monday. The Brooklyn native will now join the Chicago Bulls as an assistant coach under Tiago Splitter.
Originally taken with the 26th overall selection of the 2009 NBA Draft out of USC, Gibson appeared in 1,012 contests with the Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Hornets and Memphis Grizzlies.
Gibson last played in 2025-2026, suiting up in 10 games for the Grizzlies. He was traded by the team earlier this month to the New Orleans Pelicans as part of a deal that sent Jordan Hawkins to Memphis. Gibson was subsequently waived.
He finishes his career averaging 8.3 points on .517 shooting and 5.7 boards over 22.9 minutes a night.
