Lowry to sign one-day contract to retire with Raptors; jersey retirement planned for upcoming season

Kyle Lowry will be retiring as a member of the Toronto Raptors.

TSN’s Josh Lewenberg has confirmed Lowry will sign a one-day contract next week to conclude his playing career with the team he spent nine seasons with over his 20-year NBA career. Toronto will also retire his No. 7 jersey this upcoming season, making Lowry the second Raptor to have his jersey retired after the team put Vince Carter’s No. 15 in the rafters in 2024.

Lewenberg reports a news conference is schedule for July 7.

Lowry arrived in Toronto in a trade with the Houston Rockets in July of 2012. He helped lead the Raptors throughout their most successful period in franchise history where they made the playoffs seven seasons in a row, culminating in a championship alongside superstar Kawhi Leonard in 2019.

The announcement to retire Lowry’s jersey comes just two days after the Raptors re-acquired Leonard in a blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Lowry was an All-Star six straight seasons with the Raptors from 2014 to 2020 and is at or near the top of the list in several franchise statistical categories. The Philadelphia native is first all-time in assists (4,227), three-pointers made (1,518) and steals (873). He is second to DeMar DeRozan in games played (601) and points scored (10,540).

Widely regarded as the greatest Raptor of all-time, Lowry averaged 17.5 points, 7.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds across nine seasons with the team.

After leaving the Raptors in the summer of 2021, Lowry played two and a half seasons with the Miami Heat and wound down his playing career with his hometown Philadelphia 76ers the last three years.

Lowry appeared in just 14 games last season, averaging 1.2 points per game.
