The Dallas Mavericks waived Canadian centre Dwight Powell after 12 seasons on Monday.

The 35-year-old from Toronto averaged 3.3 points and 4.1 rebounds in 14.3 minutes per game last season for the Mavs. He played in 63 games and started 12.

“Dwight was the consummate professional throughout his 12 seasons with the Mavericks and embodies everything you want in someone representing your organization,” Mavericks president Masai Ujiri said in a news release.

“He’s a tireless worker, an incredible teammate and someone whose impact extends well beyond the basketball court and into the Dallas community. We are grateful for everything Dwight has contributed to this franchise. He will always be part of the Mavericks family, and Dallas will always be a home for him. We wish him nothing but the best in this next chapter.”

Powell averaged 6.5 points and 4.3 rebounds during his time in Dallas, which began midway through the 2014-15 season. He was originally drafted in the second round by the Charlotte Hornets in 2014 and was traded twice that summer before ending up with the Boston Celtics, where he started his NBA career.

Powell was then traded again that December, this time to the Mavs, where he found a long-term home. He is the franchise’s all-time leader in career field goal percentage (.606) and is fifth in career games played (763).

Internationally, Powell has represented Canada on numerous occasions, including at the 2023 FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup where Canada took home a historic bronze medal.
