Keep up on all the news and rumours in the NBA ahead of the trade deadline on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 3 p.m. ET
Hornets acquire Jones
The Charlotte Hornets have acquired point guard Tyus Jones from the Orlando Magic for cash considerations, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Charania adds the move gets Orlando out of the luxury tax.
Jones joined the Magic in the off-season and has appeared in 48 games so far this season, averaging 3.0 points and 2.4 assists in 15.7 minutes a night.
Hawks add centre depth
The Atlanta Hawks are acquiring centre Jock Landale from the Utah Jazz in exchange for cash considerations, reports ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Landale was acquired by the Jazz a day earlier in the blockbuster Jaren Jackson Jr. deal with the Memphis Grizzlies.
On Tuesday, the Grizzlies traded Landale, Jackson, John Konchar and Vince Williams Jr. to Utah in exchange for Georges Niang, Kyle Anderson, Walter Clayton Jr. and Taylor Hendricks. The deal also included three first-round picks for Memphis.
Landale, 30, averaged 11.3 points and 6.5 rebounds in 45 games this season.
Lonzo heads to Jazz as Cavs clear more cap room
The Cleveland Cavaliers stayed busy a day after acquiring James Harden from the Los Angeles Clippers. Shams Charania reports the team has sent guard Lonzo Ball to the Utah Jazz in exchange for two second-round picks.
Ball, 28, is expected to be waived.
Raptors acquire Paul in three-team trade
The Toronto Raptors have acquired veteran point guard Chris Paul from the Los Angeles Clippers in a multi-team trade that sends Ochai Agbaji, a 2023 second-round pick, and cash to the Brooklyn Nets, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The Raptors will not require Paul to report and could discuss further trades with him in the coming days.
Moving Agbaji’s $6.3M salary gets the Raptors under the luxury tax.
Davis Dealt to Wizards
The Dallas Mavericks have dealt 10-time All Star Anthony Davis, Jaden Hardy, D’Angelo Russell and Dante Exum to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, Marvin Bagley III, three first-round picks and three second-rounders, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The Mavericks will receive the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 2026 first-round pick, as well as a 2030 protected first-round pick that originally belonged to the Golden State Warriors.
The second rounders are in 2026 (Phoenix Suns), 2027 (Chicago Bulls), and 2029 (Houston Rockets).
The Wizards have now acquired Davis and guard Trae Young this season.
Davis, 32, is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.7 blocks in 20 games with the Mavs this season.
The Mavericks now have two first round picks in the upcoming NBA draft and get under the luxury tax by unloading Davis, along with the contracts of Russell and Jaden Hardy.
Thunder acquire McCain from Sixers
The Oklahoma City Thunder are acquiring guard Jared McCain from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick and three second-round picks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The 2026 first rounder originally belonged to the Houston Rockets. The second round picks are a 2027 selection that is the most favourable between the Thunder, Rockets, Pacers and Heat, Milwaukee’s 2028 pick, and the Thunder’s own 2028 selection.
McCain, the 16th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft, is averaging 6.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 16.8 minutes per game for the Sixers this season.
Hornets acquire White, Conley Jr. from Bulls
The Chicago Bulls have dealt Coby White and Mike Conley Jr. to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Collin Sexton, Ousmane Dieng, and three second-round picks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Charania adds that the Hornets acquired Dieng and a second-rounder from the Oklahoma City Thunder for Mason Plumlee, who was then re-routed to Chicago.
The Bulls acquired guard Anfernee Simons from the Boston Celtics on Tuesday in exchange for centre Nikola Vucevic.
Sabonis expected to stay in Sacramento
Big man Domantas Sabonis is expected to remain with the Sacramento Kings past the Feb. 5 trade deadline, reports The Athletic’s Sam Amick.
The Raptors and Washington Wizards were previously reported to have been interested in acquiring the multi-time All Star.
Timberwolves in on Giannis
The Minnesota Timberwolves are aggresively exploring a trade for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix.
The Timberwolves reportedly believe Antetokounmpo will be ready to sign a long-term extension with the club when paired with Anthony Edwards.
Mannix reports that the Bucks are looking at a package of Jayden McDaniels and multiple first-round picks in exchange for Antetokounmpo.
However, the Timberwolves traded their four first-round picks (2023, 2025, 2027, 2029) for centre Rudy Gobert in 2022 and would need to involve other teams in a multi-team deal in order to get the draft capital Milwaukee is looking for.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst says the Timberwolves and Miami Heat continue to improve the offer they can make to Milwaukee but are waiting for the Bucks to indicate that they will actually deal Antetokounmpo. He also reports that the Warriors have already put their best offer on the table.
“I suspect weeks ago, that the Bucks knew that this was going to come down to the deadline. The Warriors have put everything they can on the table.
“There are lots of conversations I’m not aware of, but I’m not aware of the Knicks doing stuff to improve their offer and they don’t have the offer that Milwaukee is going to take.
“In my view, this is a three-horse race for Giannis. I know that Giannis is ready to move.”
Raptors continue to explore deals for Sabonis, Missi
The Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings continue to discuss a deal for forward/centre Domantas Sabonis, according to NBA reporter Brett Siegel.
The reported package for the three-time All-Star reportedly includes R.J. Barrett, Jakob Poeltl, Ochai Agbaji and picks.
However, Siegel reports that the Kings are not interested in taking on Poeltl’s contract and that a third team will need to become involved for the deal to get done.
Sabonis, 29, is in the midst of a down season as he struggles though injuries. He is averaging 15.4 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 18 games this year.
He finished top-10 in MVP voting in two of his three full seasons with the Kings from 2022-25, where he has averaged 19.2 points, 13.3 rebounds, and 7.2 assists on 60 per cent shooting.
Chris Haynes reported on NBA TV that the deal, centred around Sabonis and Barrett, is being held up because the Raptors want to send multiple second-round picks along with Barrett, while the Kings are holding out for a first rounder.
NBA reporter Evan Sidery reports that the Raptors, along with the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, and Indiana Pacers are among teams showing interest in New Orleans Pelicans’ centre Yves Missi.
Sidery reports that the Pelicans are holding out for a future first-round pick in a deal for the 21-year-old big man.
Heat shopping Wiggins
The Miami Heat continue to shop forward Andrew Wiggins looking for a first-round pick as they try to enhance their offer for Antetokounmpo, Sidery reports.
The Canadian holds a $30.2 million player option for next season.
Heat Pivoting to Morant?
Brett Siegel reports that the Miami Heat are no longer at the forefront of Antetopounmpo talks are are attempting to trade for Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant.
Siegel adds that there is belief the Heat can add Morant for a similar package the Washington Wizards used to acquire Trae Young earlier this season, when they sent CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert to the Atlanta Hawks.
NBA reporter Jake Fischer says the asking price for Morant has dropped significantly.
Fischer adds that, if Morant gets dealt to the Heat or Kings, two teams rumoured to be in on the point guard, the cost will be low.
