Paul Finebaum explains why Jon Gruden is a fan favourite to fill the newly vacated head coach position at Tennessee.

Paul Finebaum will not be headed to Washington.

The ESPN college football maven tells AL.com’s Mark Heim that he will not be running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Tommy Tuberville in Alabama.

Finebaum, 70, previously disclosed his interest in running back in September.

“It has been a gratifying and rewarding experience,” Finebaum said in a statement to Heim. “I am also appreciative of my bosses at ESPN for allowing me to explore this opportunity. But it’s time for me to devote my full attention to something everyone in Alabama can agree upon - our love of college football.”

A native of Memphis, Finebaum joined ESPN in 2013 after more than 30 years of experience in print and radio, getting his start in Birmingham in 1980. The Paul Finebaum Show is a daily radio and TV simulcast on ESPN platforms.

A former head coach at Auburn and Texas Tech, Tuberville has held the Senate seat since 2021. Tuberville is planning to vacate his seat to run in the 2026 Alabama gubernatorial election.
