Maryland has fired Mike Locksley, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports.
The Terrapins moved on from their head coach after a 2-5 start to the season, including going 0-3 in Big Ten play.
The Terps currently sit tied for last in the conference with Michigan State.
A 56-year-old native of Washington, DC, Locksley was in his eighth season on the job, having previously spent six games as interim head coach in 2015 following the midseason dismissal of Randy Edsall. Edsall was fired after a 2-4 start and Locksley, the team’s offensive coordinator from 2012 to 2015, was promoted.
Locksley finishes his tenure with a 39-54 mark. His Terps teams posted eight wins in both 2021 and 2022, but they were bowl-eligible in only three of Locksley’s seven full seasons. He held a 3-0 mark in bowl play.
This was Locksley third stint at Maryland and first as head coach. It was also his first head coaching job anywhere. He previously spent time on staffs at Army, Florida, Illinois and New Mexico. Locksley worked under Nick Saban at Alabama from 2016 to 2018, finishing as his OC. In 2018, Locksley won the Broyles Award as the NCAA’s top assistant coach.
National Champions in 1953, the Terps have not won double-digit games in a season since 2003 when they were in the ACC.
Currently on a bye week, Maryland returns to action on Halloween with a visit from Illinois
