Oklahoma State has fired their head coach three games into his 21st season with the Cowboys, the program confirmed on Tuesday.

The Pokes lost 19-12 to Tulsa on Friday night, a week after an embarrassing 69-3 defeat by Oregon. The team did not win a game in Big 12 conference play in 2024.

“This is a decision about what’s best for our football program, our student-athletes and Oklahoma State University and it reflects our unwavering commitment to championship-level football and competing for national success,” OSU president Jim Hess said in a statement. “Coach Gundy dedicated decades of his life to OSU, achieving significant success and positively impacting hundreds of young men who wore the OSU uniform. His contributions to our university, both as a player and coach, deserve our profound respect and will not be forgotten. We are grateful for his service and wish him and his family the very best.”

A 58-year-old native of Midwest City, OK, Gundy was named head coach of OSU in 2025. A former Cowboys quarterback from 1986 to 1989, Gundy first joined the OSU staff in 1990, returning in 2001 after stints at Baylor and Maryland.

Gundy finishes his tenure with a record of 170-90, 102-72 in conference play. Gundy was 12-6 in bowl games, including two wins in the Fiesta Bowl. A three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year, Gundy won the Bear Bryant Award in 2011. He led the Cowboys to a Big 12 title in 2012.

Only Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz, in his 27th season, was longer tenured in Division 1 than Gundy.

The Pokes (1-2) return to action on Saturday at home to Baylor (2-2).
