Thamel notes that BYU is in the process of putting together a lucrative new deal for Sitake.
Born in Tonga, Sitake is in his 10th season with the Cougars. After an 11-1 season, BYU is set to play undefeated Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship game this weekend. He has an 83-44 record at BYU.
The 50-year-old Sitake spent four years with the Cougars as a player, appearing in 37 games from 1997 to 2000 as a fullback.
Prior to returning to his alma mater, Sitake served time as defensive coordinator at both Utah and Oregon State.
Penn State is looking for a successor to James Franklin, who was fired by the Nittany Lions in October in the midst of his 12th season at State College. Franklin subsequently became the new head coach at Virginia Tech last month.
