Colts quarterback Daniel Jones has been one of the most surprising stories of the season so far as the NFL calendar approaches the quarter mark.

The former sixth-overall draft pick by the New York Giants in 2019 seemed to put it all together in a career year in 2022 but flamed out in his last two seasons with the Giants, throwing for 10 touchdowns against 13 interceptions and a 3-13 record across 16 starts. Jones was benched after 10 games a season ago and cut by the Giants before season’s end.

Jones signed a one-year deal over the off-season to compete for the starting job with the Colts, though it would have been hard to predict what was coming.

After wrestling the starting job from another former top draft pick in Anthony Richardson and being given the keys to the offence, Jones burst out of the gates, leading the Colts to a surprise 3-0 start and accounting for six touchdowns and no turnovers.

Last week against the Los Angeles Rams, Jones threw a pair of interceptions and lost a fumble in the Colts’ 27-20 loss. Now he will look to bounce back against the Las Vegas Raiders and get the offence humming again.

Through four weeks this season, Jones has the highest net yards gained per pass attempt (8.35) in the NFL, and that efficiency has helped star running back Jonathan Taylor get off to a hot start as well, as his 414 rushing yards lead the NFL entering Week 5.

During their 3-0 start, the Colts averaged a dangerous 34.3 points per game, and against a Raiders defence that has allowed 20 or more points in three straight games, Jones has a chance to light up the stat sheet at home.

The Seattle Seahawks opted to move on from Geno Smith this off-season and signed Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract - making the 28-year-old their quarterback of the future.

Darnold was taken with the third-overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2018 NFL Draft, ahead of now-superstars Lamar Jackson and Baker Mayfield. The USC star struggled with Gang Green, putting together a 13-25 record over three seasons with 45 touchdown passes against 39 interceptions.

Darnold bounced around after leaving New York, with stops as a backup in Carolina and San Francisco before finally getting an opportunity to start with the Minnesota Vikings a year ago after first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy went down with an injury.

The Vikings couldn’t have asked for more from their backup. Darnold threw a career-high 35 touchdown passes, was named to the Pro Bowl and led the team to a 14-3 record. That success earned him a chance to carry the torch in Seattle, and the early returns have been promising.

Darnold and the Seahawks struggled in a 23-16 loss in their opener but have put together three straight wins - two on the road - with Darnold accounting for five touchdown passes in those games.

Through four games this year, Darnold leads the NFL in yards per attempts (9.1) and yards per completion (12.9). His connection with top receiving threat Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been particularly fruitful, as Smith-Njigba ranks second in the NFL with 402 yards receiving and is averaging more than 15 yards per catch.

Darnold and the Seahawks have to contend with the 3-1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers led by quarterback Baker Mayfield, who is another top pick in the 2018 draft who has revitalized his career with a new team. Mayfield and Darnold were even teammates briefly with the Panthers in 2022.

Mayfield told reporters earlier this week that he and Darnold still remain close friends after their time in Carolina. Now the two will have to duke it out on the field in Seattle. Mayfield has defeated Darnold in both of their head-to-head meetings in the NFL, back in 2018 and 2019.
