The New England Patriots and star cornerback Christian Gonzalez agreed to terms on a record-setting four-year, $135 million extension, sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler late Monday night.
The deal includes $102 million guaranteed, sources said.
Gonzalez is now the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, eclipsing the four-year, $132 million extension that Devon Witherspoon received from the Seattle Seahawks last month. Witherspoon's deal included more than $101 million in guaranteed money. Both players share the same agent, Reggie Johnson.
Gonzalez's deal, which was completed less than 48 hours before Wednesday's regular-season opener against the Seahawks in a Super Bowl LX rematch, answers what had been the biggest question facing the Patriots.
Gonzalez, the No. 17 pick in the 2023 NFL draft who has been an All-Pro and Pro Bowl cornerback, was eligible for an extension for the first time this offseason.
He had been a full participant in training camp until he suffered a lower leg injury Aug. 10 after practicing one-on-one with receiver A.J. Brown. Gonzalez returned to practice Aug. 24, and made the trip to Seattle for Wednesday's game. Talks intensified Monday night before the agreement was reached.
The status of the contract talks had lingered for months, with Gonzalez expressing frustration Aug. 25 that the situation remained unresolved.
At the start of training camp, owner Robert Kraft said the team had offered Gonzalez a deal that would make him the NFL's highest-paid cornerback, although Gonzalez later said there are different ways to measure that.
Gonzalez didn't attend the majority of the Patriots' voluntary offseason program, and in mandatory minicamp, he participated only in walkthrough/low-tempo drills -- an indication he was jockeying for a new deal.
On June 9, Gonzalez said he hoped to be "rewarded as a Patriot." He was under contract for two more seasons, scheduled to earn $2.259 million in 2026 and $18.11 million in 2027. The Patriots also could have assigned him the franchise tag in 2028.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel and executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said multiple times that they hoped to retain Gonzalez. Late last season, Vrabel and Gonzalez noted that they were working together on expanding Gonzalez's leadership role.
Gonzalez and veteran Carlton Davis III are the Patriots' starting cornerbacks, with Marcus Jones the top slot option.
Gonzalez delivered some of his best performances in the highest-stakes games, notching an interception late in an AFC Championship Game victory over the Denver Broncos and totaling four tackles and three passes defended in the Super Bowl LX loss to the Seahawks.
Gonzalez, 24, missed the final 13 games of his rookie season because of a dislocated right shoulder and a torn labrum. He returned in 2024 to start the first 16 games before missing the regular-season finale after sustaining a concussion in Week 17. And in 2025, Gonzalez missed the season's first three games as he recovered from a hamstring injury in training camp.
Gonzalez has played in 34 regular-season games, starting all of them, and has started four postseason games. Including the postseason, he has four career interceptions.
