Report: Hurts’ clearance ‘was handled appropriately’ by Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles will not be punished for the manner in which the team dealt with the health of Jalen Hurts.

An NFL source tells The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones that the process in which the 28-year-old quarterback was cleared to play with a blood clot “was handled appropriately.”

In the days after the Oct. 11 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London, circumstances for Hurts changed. The superficial blood clot moved and more clots were found in his lungs. Hurts was ruled out for the remainder of the season on Monday.

Hurts was initially cleated during an Oct. 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams and was cleared the following day. He first sought treatment for the clot on Oct. 8, according to both the team and Hurts’s agent. The source told Jones that the instruction for Hurts not to sleep during was not specific to him and the entire team was told to stay awake to remain on Eastern time. Hurts would go on to sleep for over seven hours ahead of the game.

While Hurts appeared on the injury report on the Friday, he was not issued a designation. Jones notes that because Hurts’s snaps weren’t going to be at all limited, a designation wasn’t necessary and the team did not violate the league’s injury report policy.

With Hurts out, Tanner McKee started in his stead in Sunday’s 25-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers. He is expected to start again on Monday when the team (2-4) hosts the Dallas Cowboys (2-4).
