Petzing, 38, spent the past three seasons as OC of the Arizona Cardinals.
The Cardinals made a coaching change at the end of the season, firing Jonathan Gannon.
Petzing succeeds John Morton, who was let go after one season. He becomes a third OC in three years for the Lions, who lost Ben Johnson to their NFC North rival Chicago Bears following last season. Johnson coached the Bears to a division title in his first season on the job.
Prior to joining the Cardinals, Petzing spent time on the staffs of the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings.
The Lions finished fifth this past season in total offence at 373.2 yard per game, but missed the playoffs for the first time in three seasons at 9-8.
