Seahawks rule out RB Charbonnet vs. Chiefs

Published:

RENTON, Wash. -- Zach Charbonnet's season debut will have to wait at least one more week as the Seattle Seahawks have ruled out the running back for Sunday night's game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Charbonnet is roughly eight months removed from surgery to repair a torn left ACL. He resumed practicing Oct. 1, progressed to full participation Wednesday and was activated off the physically unable to perform list on Thursday.

Coach Mike Macdonald on Friday said Charbonnet did not suffer a setback, and that "if anything, it's going as good as we could hope it could go."

The team listed Charbonnet as a full participant all three days this week. He'd previously been listed as limited on all eight of the injury reports released once he returned to practice.

"I think we're going along with the plan," Macdonald said. "The plan was to get a great week's worth of work and see where we're at, and so we're going to take it into next week. I'd just say it's part of the plan. Zach's doing great, and we'll go into next week, see how it goes."

The defending Super Bowl champions will get right guard Anthony Bradford (knee) back for Sunday's game, but they're dealing with injuries to several other starters as they try to snap a two-game losing streak.

Weakside linebacker Drake Thomas (ankle) will miss a second straight game, while outside linebackers DeMarcus Lawrence (knee) and Uchenna Nwosu (hip) as well as safety Nick Emmanwori (hip) are questionable.

"I wouldn't say he got hurt," Macdonald said of Emmanwori. "He just had a hip today."

Quarterback Drew Lock (right elbow) and outside linebacker Connor O'Toole (hamstring) are also questionable, while linebacker Chazz Surratt (calf) is out. All five of Seattle's questionable players were listed as limited participants Friday.

Macdonald said he is planning for Bradford, who has missed the past five games, to play the whole game after rotating Christian Haynes and Beau Stephens in his absence. Seattle will have to activate Bradford off injured reserve by Saturday.

With Charbonnet not yet ready and rookie first-round pick Jadarian Price still on IR, the Seahawks' top three running backs are Emanuel Wilson, George Holani and Velus Jones Jr. Price, who has missed the past three games with a chest injury, will be eligible to return off IR next week.

"J.D.'s doing well," Macdonald said Friday. "We'll look at it. Next week I believe is when his window can open."

The Seahawks on Friday signed wide receiver/special teamer Irv Charles off their practice squad, released Trevon Diggs and then re-signed the cornerback to their practice squad. As a vested veteran, Diggs did not have to go through waivers.
