Montreal Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault was assigned to the AHL’s Laval Rocket for a conditioning sting on Tuesday.

Montembeault, 29, has struggled this season, going 5-6-1 with an .857 save percentage and 3.65 goals-against average.

The 6-foot-3 netminder hasn’t appeared in a game since Dec. 9 and his last start was a 5-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Dec. 2 where he allowed five goals on 29 shots.

Jakub Dobes has taken the majority of the starts in Montembeault’s absence, going 3-2-0 in the month of December.

A 6-foot-4 goaltender, Dobes has an 11-5-2 record this season with an .892 save percentage and 3.03 GAA.

Montreal is also giving an opportunity to 21-year-old goaltender Jacob Fowler with Montembeault out of the mix.

Fowler has appeared in two games this season since debuting on Dec.11, going 1-0-1 with an .896 save percentage and a 3.42 GAA.

Montreal sits tied for third place with the Boston Bruins in the Atlantic Division with a 17-11-4 record.

The Canadiens are in the middle of a four-game homestand where they will host the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, followed by the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday, and wrapping up with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
