The Montreal Canadiens announced on Monday that Derek Lalonde has been hired as an associate coach, joining Martin St. Louis’s staff.
Lalonde was recently let go as one of the assistant coaches with the Toronto Maple Leafs after he spent one season under Craig Berube, who was fired in May with new management coming in.
Lalonde spent two seasons as head coach of the Detroit Red Wings (2022-24), where the team went 89-86-23 in 198 regular-season games as the team missed the playoffs both years in his tenure.
The 53-year-old also spent four seasons as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning, helping the team win back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 2020 and 2021.
The Canadiens are coming off a campaign where they made it to the Eastern Conference Final before losing in five games to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes.
