Lane Hutson scored in the second period for the Montreal Canadiens as they are tied 2-2 with the Carolina Hurricanes after 40 minutes of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final.
The best-of-seven series is tied 1-1.
The Canadiens began the second period shorthanded having to kill off half of the interference penalty taken by Kaiden Guhle with just under a minute left in the opening frame.
The penalty kill was successful to keep the deficit at 2-1.
Jordan Martinook went to the box for slashing at 4:18 after he knocked the stick out of Hutson’s hands in the Canadiens zone.
The 22-year-old Canadiens defenceman wasted little time scoring on the power play he helped earn by firing the puck past Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen, on a slick feed from Cole Caufield, at 4:43.
After the Canadiens scored the tying marker, the game opened up for end-to-end action with both teams unable to convert on quality chances.
Guhle went back to the box at 12:42 for tripping as he pulled Andrei Svechnikov down to the ice in front of the net.
Carolina hit the post with the man advantage, but were not able to beat Jakub Dobes in the Canadiens goal.
Sean Walker went to the box for the Hurricanes at 18:09 as he ran over Dobes and was given a goaltender interference penalty.
Jake Evans was given two minutes for roughing after he went after Walker following the play.
The teams will begin the third period playing 4-on-4 for nine seconds.
The Hurricanes led 2-1 to begin the second period thanks to goals from Shayne Gostisbehere and Taylor Hall.
They have scored first in every game in this series.
