The New Jersey Devils placed defenceman Luke Hughes on long-term injured reserve on Wednesday with a shoulder injury.

The move is retroactive to Jan. 19. In a corresponding move, Colton White has been recalled from the American Hockey League’s Utica Devils.

Hughes, 22, incurred the injury during Monday night’s 2-1 win over the Calgary Flames. Hughes appeared to be hurt while chasing Justin Kirkland for a loose puck during the second period.

A native of Manchester, NH, Hughes is in his fourth NHL season after being selected with the fourth overall selection of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft out of the United States Hockey League’s USA U-18 Development Team. He appeared in 49 games this season, scoring four goals and adding 21 assists while averaging 23:04 of ice time a night.

Hughes is the younger brother of Devils teammate Jack Hughes and Minnesota Wild defenceman Quinn Hughes.

White, 28, is in his second stint with the Devils. He has four assists in 23 games this season.

The Devils return to action on Friday night on the road against the Vancouver Canucks.
