The Anaheim Ducks announced on Tuesday that veteran forward Mikael Granlund is the 10th captain in franchise history.
He succeeds previous captain Radko Gudas, who wore the ‘C’ for two seasons before being traded to the Florida Panthers on June 29.
Anaheim also named Leo Carlsson, Alex Killorn, Jackson LaCombe and Troy Terry as the four alternate captains.
“Mikael has been a strong leader in our locker room and with his national team over the years, and he is a natural fit with where we are as a hockey club,” said Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek in a news release. “Both our management group and coaching staff have seen how he leads by example and exemplifies how a captain carries themselves on and off the ice. He personifies the professionalism, humility, mentorship and quiet intensity that will lead the various personalities of our group.”
Granlund, 34, scored 19 goals with 41 points in 58 games last season with the Ducks, his first with the team. He also scored five goals with 10 points in 12 playoff games before the Ducks were eliminated in the second round by the Vegas Golden Knights.
Internationally, Granlund has helped Finland win two Olympic bronze medals (2014 and 2026) and three World Championship gold medals.
Drafted ninth overall by Minnesota in 2010, the Oulu, Finland native has skated in 960 career NHL games, scoring 198 goals with 651 points split between the Wild, Nashville Predators, Pittsburgh Penguins, San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars and Ducks.
