The Montreal Canadiens announced on Saturday that former defenceman Lyle Odelein has passed away at the age of 58.
Odelein was a member of the Canadiens squad that won the Stanley Cup in 1993.
A seventh-round pick (141st overall) by Montreal in 1986, Odelein spent six full seasons with the Canadiens.
His last NHL season came in 2005-26 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, appearing in just 27 games due to a knee injury before retiring from professional hockey.
Odelein was also the first captain in Columbus Blue Jackets history in 2000-01 after being claimed in the expansion draft from the Phoenix Coyotes.
The Quill Lake, Sask., native skated in 1,056 career NHL games, scoring 50 goals with 252 points and 2,316 penalty minutes split between the Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, Coyotes, Blue Jackets, Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers and Penguins.
