Montreal Canadiens veteran defenceman Mike Matheson was fined $5,000 by the NHL Department of Player Safety on Sunday morning for roughing Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig during Saturday’s pre-season finale.
The incident happened midway though the second period when Greig knocked down Matheson in front of the Habs’ net before Matheson retaliated with two punches, including one while Greig was down on the ice.
Both players received two-minute minors for roughing on the play.
Matheson, 32, scored seven goals and added 30 assists over 78 games for the Canadiens in 2025-26, his fourth season in Montreal.
He had two goals and two assists over 19 playoff games.
Greig, 24, had 13 goals and 22 assists over 77 games with the Sens last season, his fourth in the nation’s capital.
