Forward Ivan Demidov returned to practice on Friday after missing the last two sessions with a lower-body injury, according to Karine Hains of The Hockey News.

Demidov blocked a shot during the team's pre-season overtime victory over the Ottawa Senators in Trois-Rivieres on Monday, causing him to miss some ice time.

He is expected to get back into game action over the weekend before the Canadiens open their season on Tuesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The 20-year-old forward had 19 goals and 62 points in 82 games as a rookie last season.

Forward Tyler Seguin is expected to play in Friday's pre-season game against the Minnesota Wild, according to Stars radio analyst Bruce LeVine.

Seguin has not appeared in an NHL game since Dec. 2, 2025 after undergoing knee surgery.

The 34-year-old centre had seven goals and 17 points in 27 games last season.

Washington Capitals

The team expects captain Alex Ovechkin will be ready when the Capitals begin the regular season on Oct. 2 against the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, according to head coach Spencer Carbery.

Ovechkin, 41, is considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury, but returned to practice earlier in the week. He will not against the Boston Bruins on Friday or the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.

The 6-foot-3 winger is entering his 22nd season in the NHL and had 32 goals and 64 points in 82 games last season.

Additionally, the Capitals assigned forwards Bogdan Trineyev, defenceman Jacob MacDonald, and goaltender Mitch Gibson to the AHL's Hershey Bears on Friday.

Ottawa Senators

Defenceman Jordan Spence returned to practice on Friday but blueliners Jake Sanderson and Thomas Chabot, as well as forwards Fabian Zetterlund and Shane Pinto were missing from the session, according to Julian McKenzie of The Athletic.

Head coach Travis Green told reporters on Thursday and Pinto is dealing with an undisclosed injury and will know more about his status on Friday.

The Blues assigned forwards Aleksanteri  Kaskimaki, Dylan Peterson, and Otto Stenberg, and defenceman Adam Jiricek to the AHL's Springfield Thunderbirds on Friday to trim their pre-season roster to 28 players.

The Sabres signed defenceman Matt Grzelcyk to a one-year, $850,000 contract on Friday.

Grzelcyk, 32, registered 12 assists in 69 games with the Chicago Blackhawks last season while averaging 16:58 in ice time.

Columbus Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets placed goaltender Elvis Merzlikins and forward Isac Lundestrom on the non-roster injury list on Friday.

Merzlikins underwent off-season surgery in August and was given no timeline for his return. The 32-year-old netminder had a 14-11-3 record with the Blue Jackets last season with a .883 save percentage and 3.40 goals against average while splitting the net with fellow goalie Jet Greaves.

He is entering the final season of a five-year, $27 million contract.

Lundestrom is recovering from off-season surgery on his Achilles that he had in July and isn't expected to return until November. The 6-foot-1 centre had four goals and 12 points in 68 games last season and is on the final season of a two-year, $2.6 million deal.

Additionally, the Blue Jackets assigned Nolan Lalonde, Oiva Keskinen, Luke Tuch, Charlie Elick, and Guillaume Richard to the AHL's Cleveland Monsters on Friday.
