Ice Chips: Hagens, 19, cracks Bruins roster

St. Louis Blues 

The Blues announced Monday that defencemen Tyler Tucker and Logan Mailloux will start the season on injured reserve. 

Tucker is considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury, while Mailloux will be re-evaluated in eight weeks after undergoing surgery on his right hand. 

Tucker, 26, posted three goals and 17 points in 69 games with the Blues last season. 

Mailloux, 23, had five goals and 13 points in 67 games last season, having joined the Blues in a July 2025 trade with the Montreal Canadiens.

Montreal Canadiens

Centre Oliver Kapanen is day-to-day with a lower-body injury and will not practice today, Kenzie Lalonde reports.

It's a significant blow for the Canadiens on the eve of the season as, in camp, Kapanen took reps as the second-line centre between Juraj Slafkovsky and Ivan Demidov. 

Lalonde also relays that Florian Xhekaj and Adam Engstrom are the final two players from camp to stay up with the Canadiens. 


ICYMI: Habs send Fowler, Reinbacher to AHL


The Montreal Canadiens made a number of roster cuts on Sunday, as goaltender Jacob Fowler and defenceman David Reinbacher were among those assigned to the AHL's Laval Rocket.

Owen Beck, Dillan Bentley, Laurent Dauphin, Jared Davidson, Filip Mesar, Luke Mittelstadt, Owen Protz and Tyler Thorpe were also reassigned to the AHL.

Fowler appeared in 17 games last season with the Canadiens, going 9-6-2 with a .908 save percentage and 2.43 GAA and was the backup goaltender down the stretch and into the playoffs. 

Reinbacher, the fifth-overall pick in 2023, scored five goals with 24 points in 57 games last season with Laval. In two appearances with Montreal, he had one assist. 

The team also placed nine players on waivers as Alex Belzile, Brett Berard, Kaapo Kahkonen, Hunter McKown, Sasha Pastujov, Samuel Poulin, Ethan Samson, Maksymilian Szuber and Reilly Walsh have all been waived for purpose of loan to the AHL. 
Canadian Teams

Ottawa Senators

Forwards Shane Pinto and Warren Foegele were both on the ice as the Senators held a skills session ahead of practice on Monday. Both of the forwards also returned to the ice for practice after a flood. 

Jake Sanderson, Artem Zub, Andre Burakovsky, Kurtis MacDermid were all absent from the skills session and did not take part in practice, either.

For Foegele, Monday's skates marked his first work in a team session since training camp opened.

Waivers Watch

The wait continues to see whether any of the many notable names placed on waivers Sunday will be claimed when the news drops at 2pm ET. 

Veteran goaltenders Laurent Brossoit, Davis Rittich and Ilya Samsonov are among the options available. 

Columbus Blue Jackets

Defenceman Ivan Provorov was the lone player absent as the Blue Jackets held practice on Monday. 

Reporter Mark Scheig notes that Miles Wood was also not on the ice, the expectation is that he will be assigned to the AHL.

Columbus will open its regular season on Thursday.

Florida Panthers

Forward Brady Tkachuk was on the ice for practice Monday as he gets set to make his Panthers debut against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday.

Tkachuk was removed from a preseason game last week for precautionary reasons and appears to be on track to be ready for the team's opener. 

Boston Bruins

Bruins general manager Don Sweeney confirmed Monday that 23-year-old defenceman Frederic Brunet and 19-year-old forward James Hagens have made the team's opening-night roster.

Sweeney also said that forward Matthew Poitras will get an extended look with the NHL team once he is activated off the injured list. 

Brunet claiming a roster spot appears to have come at the expense of defenceman Henri Jokiharju, who was placed on waivers Sunday.

Jokiharju scored two goals with 15 points in 41 games last season with the Bruins. 

A first-round pick (29th overall) by Chicago in 2017, the 27-year-old has skated in 448 career NHL games, scoring 21 goals with 112 points, split between the Blackhawks, Buffalo Sabres and Bruins. 

Hagens was selected seventh overall in the 2025 draft. He had 23 goals and 47 points in 34 games with Boston College last season before joining the Bruins for two games late in the year, posting one assist. 

Poitras scored 13 goals with 44 points in 69 games with the AHL's Providence Bruins last season. He also appeared in three games with Boston, scoring one goal.
