Edmonton Oilers
Leon Draisaitl will be stepping away from the Edmonton Oilers for a brief leave of absence, it was announced Saturday.
“Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl will be taking a brief leave of absence to attend to a family illness in Germany,” the club said in a statement. “He is expected to return to the team later next week.
“On behalf of Leon, the club asks for privacy at this time.”
Draisaitl, 30, will miss his first game of the season on Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks, and is also likely to sit out Sunday against the St. Louis Blues.
In 48 games played this season, Draisaitl has totaled 25 goals and 42 assists for 67 points.
Winnipeg Jets
Winnipeg Jets defenceman Colin Miller will be out week-to-week following knee surgery, head coach Scott Arniel told reporters on Saturday.
Arniel noted that the procedure was similar to the arthroscopic knee surgery that goaltender Connor Hellebuyck underwent earlier in the season.
Hellebuyck was initially given a timeline of four-to-six weeks, but returned to game action for the Jets just three weeks following the surgery.
Miller, 33, was injured in last Sunday’s 4-3 win over the New Jersey Devils following an awkward collision with Arseny Grisyuk.
The Sault Ste Marie, Ont. native was placed on injured reserve Monday with the injury.
In 15 games played this season, Miller has recorded one assist while averaging 13:45 of ice time.
Montreal Canadiens
Samuel Montembeault will get the start in net for the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday against the Ottawa Senators.
Montembeault, 29, will make his 18th start of the year just one day after the Canadiens loaned Jacob Fowler back to the Laval Rocket (AHL), ending the team’s three-goalie rotation.
The Becancour, Que. native last appeared in Tuesday’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Washington Capitals, where he turned aside 39 of 42 shot attempts.
Montembeualtowns a 3.35 goals-against average with an .874 save percentage this season.
