Newly acquired winger Kirill Marchenko may not be available to the Leafs when they open the 2026-27 campaign against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday, according to TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston.
Marchenko, 26, was acquired by the Maple Leafs, along with forward Miles Wood and goalie Elvis Merzlikins, from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday in exchange for forwards Matthew Knies, Steven Lorentz, defenceman Emil Andrae, and a conditional 2027 second-round pick from the Seattle Kraken. The Leafs then signed Marchenko to a six-year, $75 million contract extension.
The 6-foot-3 forward still needs to complete the work visa process to play in Canada and it is unclear if the process will be finished in time for the opener.
Marchenko recorded 27 goals and 67 points in 76 games with the Blue Jackets last season.

Forward Matthew Knies and defenceman Emil Andrae will not arrive in Columbus in time for practice on Tuesday after they were acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday, according to Aaron Portzline of The Athletic.
The Blue Jackets acquired Knies and Andrae, along with a second-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft, from the Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Kirill Marchenko, Miles Wood, and goaltender Elvis Merzlikins.
Columbus expects the pair will practice with the team on Wednesday and be ready to play in Thursday's season opener against the Buffalo Sabres.
Knies, 23, registered 23 goals and 66 points in 79 games with the Maple Leafs last season.
Andrae was acquired by the Maple Leafs in the off-season, along with goalie Samuel Ersson and a third-round pick in the 2026 draft, from the Philadelphis Flyers in exchange for defenceman Simon Benoit and goalie Joseph Woll.
The 24-year-old had two goals and 13 points in 61 games with the Flyers last season while averaging 15:20 of ice time.
