Bo Horvat will be the 16th captain of the New York Islanders, the team announced on Monday.
Horvat will take the C from Anders Lee, who spent the past eight seasons as captain of the Islanders before departing in free agency to join the Utah Mammoth on a three-year deal in the summer.
The 31-year-old Horvat has spent the past three-plus seasons in New York since coming over in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks during the 2022-23 campaign.
Last year, Horvat finished third on the team with 57 points across 68 games, behind Matthew Barzal and Calder Trophy-winning defenceman Matthew Schaefer.
Noteworthy Islanders captains over the year include Hockey Hall of Famers Clark Gillies (1976-79) and Denis Potvin (1979-87), as well as current Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares (2013-18).
Horvat has 300 goals and 618 points over 881 career NHL games split between the Canucks and Islanders. He represented Canada at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympic Games, helping the team to a silver medal.
