New York Islanders defenceman Logan Stanley was given a $3,865.98 fine for slashing New Jersey Devils forward Nico Hischier on Saturday, it was announced by the Department of Player Safety on Sunday afternoon.
The fine is the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The incident occurred with just under a minute remaining in the second period. After Hischier fell awkwardly in front of the Islanders crease, he got up and jabbed Stanley in the side with his stick.
In response, Stanley whacked Hischier up high with his stick, sending the Devils captain to the ice. Stanley followed with a cross-check to Hischier’s back while he lay on the ice, but the centre was able to get back up moments later.
A scrum ensued, resulting in players from both sides receiving penalties - Islanders defenceman Matthew Schaefer and Devils defenceman Luke Hughes traded roughing penalties, while Stanley and Devils defenceman Brett Pesce also traded roughing penalties. Stanley was also called for a two-minute minor penalty for slashing.
The Devils went on to win the game 5-4 on a goal by Hughes in overtime. New Jersey tallied 50 shots on goal in the contest.
