The New York Islanders announced Wednesday that centre Mathew Barzal will not skate the next two weeks due to aggravation of a prior injury that has caused inflammation.
“He is actively working to get back to full health. There is nobody more committed than Mathew to getting his body to the level where he thrives on the ice,” the team said in a statement.
“We expect him to continue getting healthy and back in the lineup as soon as possible.”
Barzal, 29, recorded 19 goals and 72 points in 81 games with the Islanders last season.
The 6-foot-1 centre is entering the third season of an eight-year, $73.2 million contract that carries an annual cap hit of $9.15 million.
Drafted 16th overall by the Islanders in 2015, Barzal has 153 goals and 534 points in 611 career games.
