Luukkonen, 27, incurred a lower-body injury during a Jan. 27 game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Although Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said on Monday that Luukkonen was “progressing” in his recovery, he will not be ready to travel to Italy.
Korpisalo, 31, is in his 11th NHL season and second with the Bruins. He’s appeared in 21 games this season, posting a 10-8-1 record with a goals against average of .312 and an .895 save percentage.
A native of Pori, Korpisalo has previously suited up for the Ottawa Senators, Los Angeles Kings and Columbus Blue Jackets.
Internationally, Korpisalo helped Finland to a fourth-place finish at the 2017 IIHF World Championship in Germany and France.
Korpisalo now joins the Vancouver Canucks’ Kevin Lankinen and Jusse Saros of the Nashville Predators as Finnish coach Antti Pennanen’s goaltending options.
Finland will compete in Group B alongside hosts Italy, Slovakia and Sweden. They open their tournament on Feb. 11 against Slovakia.
