Leafs’ Woll, Matthew Tkachuk to join U.S. at IIHF worlds

Published:

Joseph Woll is about to represent his country.

The Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender is one of 25 players who will join the defending champion United States’ entry at this month’s IIHF World Hockey Championship, USA Hockey announced on Thursday.

The tournament gets underway on May 15 in Switzerland.

“We’re excited about our group,” U.S. general manager and Florida Panther assistant GM Brett Peterson said in a release. “We’ve got a good blend of players that are excited about representing our country and competing for a gold medal. We’re looking forward to the tournament and know Switzerland will be a great host.”

Woll, 27, appeared in 39 games this past season, his fifth in the NHL. He went 15-16-7 with a goals against average of 3.31 and an .899 save percentage.

The tournament will mark the Dardenne Prairie, MO native’s senior debut. Woll has previously represented the United States on a number of occasions at youth levels, including as part of a gold medal-winning entry at the 2017 World Juniors in Toronto and Montreal.

Joining Woll in net will be Devin Cooley of the Calgary Flames and Chicago Blackhawks prospect Drew Commesso.

Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk will be the only returning member of the team from the U.S.’s Olympic gold-medal triumph this past February. The two-time Stanley Cup winner will be making his worlds debut after playing in the 2016 World Juniors, as well as the 2024 4 Nations Face-Off.

Commesso, New York Rangers defenceman Will Borgen and Detroit Red Wings rearguard Justin Faulk have all previously played at the Winter Olympics.

Other players representing Canadian teams are Flames forward Matt Coronato, Edmonton Oilers forward Isaac Howard and forward Max Sasson from the Vancouver Canucks.

The United States opens up its tournament on May 15 against the host Swiss. It will compete in Group A also alongside Great Britain, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Hungary and Austria.
