Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman did not travel with the team to Vancouver, and could miss a couple of weeks with an injury, per TSN’s Ryan Rishaug.
As Rishaug reports, the injury may have occurred during the Oilers’ final pre-season game against the Calgary Flames on Saturday.
Hyman played 20:33 in the Oilers’ 6-5 loss to the Canucks on Tuesday, where he recorded three shots and two hits and finished with a +1 rating.
Hyman is playing in his sixth season in Edmonton after starting his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 12th-year player scored 31 goals and finished with 52 points in 58 games last season, adding two goals in six games in the postseason.
His injury is another in a growing list of injuries in the season’s opening week - the Oilers placed centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on IR earlier on Thursday, as the veteran is dealing with a lower-boy injury.
The injury, that was sustained in practice on Monday, kept him out of the team’s loss to the Canucks in Tuesday’s season opener.
Babcock said Tuesday that Nugent-Hopkins did not have a timeline for a potential return, but also noted that he only expects Nugent-Hopkins to be out short-term.
In the same move, the Oilers placed forward Matt Savoie and defenceman Alec Regula on LTIR.
Savoie, 22, missed training camp while recovering from an off-season injury suffered in training. He set career highs across the board last season in his first full-time stint in the NHL with the Oilers, posting 18 goals and 37 points in 82 games.
The 26-year-old Regula is recovering from off-season surgery and does not have a timeline for a return to play at this point. He skated in 29 games for the Oilers last season, registering three assists. He missed the entirety of the 2024-2025 season with a knee injury.
The Oilers said in a release in August that updates on Savoie and Regula would be released at the appropriate time for both.
The Oilers return to action Thursday evening in a rematch against the Canucks in Vancouver.
