Panthers acquire D Pieniniemi in trade with Penguins

The Florida Panthers have acquired defenceman Emil Pieniniemi from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for the rights to forward Oliver Okuliar, it was announced Saturday morning.

The 21-year-old Pieniniemi spent last season in the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers, tallying six goals and 11 points in 26 games. He also played nine AHL games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, recording one goal and two assists.

He was selected in the third round (No. 91 overall) by the Pens in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Okuliar, 26, had 15 goals and 29 points in 46 games last season for Skelleftea AIK of the Swedish Hockey League. He was signed by the Panthers in April of 2024.
