Calgary Flames general manager Craig Conroy has opened talks on a potential extension with forward Morgan Frost.
Frost is a pending unrestricted free agent, carrying a cap hit of $4.375 million in the last of a two-year deal signed with Calgary in 2025. He has three goals and seven points in 11 games to star this season after topping the 20-goal mark for the first time last year.
“There’s some important work still ahead for general manager Craig Conroy, notably Morgan Frost, their pending unrestricted free-agent centre,” TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun explained Tuesday on Insider Trading. “He’s 27 years old, absolutely still fits in terms of his age and what the Flames are building out there. Conroy said to me for a piece I wrote in The Athletic on Monday that obviously they’d like to talk contract on Frost but they also have to figure out in this new world of rising salaries - what’s it going to cost, exactly, to extend Frost?
“The agent is Darren Ferris, and Ferris and Conroy had an initial preliminary discussion on Monday to get the ball rolling on this subject. Ferris loves to bring his clients to market, but in this particular case, there is mutual interest to try to get an extension done at some point this year.”
Frost posted a career-high 22 goals and had 43 points in 82 games last season, his first full year with the Flames after being acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers the previous season.
Calgary added Frost and Joel Farabee from the Flyers for Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier and two draft picks ahead of the 2025 trade deadline.
Selected 27th overall in the 2017 draft, Frost has 78 goals and 197 points in 403 games with the Flames and Flyers.
The Flames are currently flush with $14.3 million in cap space this season, per PuckPedia, and are projected to have a whopping $43.7 million in space next summer with 16 players already under contract.
In addition to Frost, forwards Ryan Strome and Maxim Tsyplakov are scheduled for unrestricted free agency, along with defenceman Joel Hanley.
Forwards Adam Klapka, Brennan Othmann and Aydar Suniev are currently set for restricted free agency in July.
The Flames have recently turned a corner after a dismal start to their season, with four straight wins to improve to 5-6-0 on the year.
