Red Wings sign D Chiarot to three-year extension

The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenceman Ben Chiarot to a three-year, $11.55 million extension with an annual cap hit of $3.85 million.

Chiarot, 34, played the last four seasons with the Red Wings, recording four goals and 11 points in 54 games this season while averaging 21:07 of ice time.

The 6-foot-3, left-shot defenceman was in the final season of a four-year, $19 million deal and was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Drafted 120th overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009, Chiarot has 49 goals and 181 points in 777 career games split between the Winnipeg Jets, Montreal Canadiens, Florida Panthers, and Red Wings.

Chiarot helped the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup Final in 2021, recording a goal and two points in 22 playoff games while averaging 25:15 of ice time.

The Red Wings sit in second place in the Atlantic Division with a 32-17-5 record and are one point behind the Tampa Bay Lightning.
