Colorado Avalanche franchise icon Joe Sakic is set to remain as the team’s general manager on a full-time basis, according to a report from the Denver Post.
Sakic, 57, has reportedly committed to continue serving in the role with no search for a replacement.
The Burnaby, B.C. native was originally tasked with overseeing Colorado’s general manager duties in the wake of Chris MacFarland’s departure from the organization in June.
At the time, Colorado’s ownership said Sakic would serve as the team’s general manager through the 2026 NHL draft and into the start of the league year.
Sakic originally served as Colorado’s general manger from 2014-22, before being promoted to president after leading the Avalanche to their third Stanley Cup victory in franchise history.
After Colorado was swept by the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final last year, Sakic has reportedly been “invigorated” with a return to his old post.
He has already taken care of this off-season’s most pressing piece of business, an eight-year, $163.2 million extension for star defenceman Cale Makar that set a new benchmark for highest AAV in league history.
Under MacFarland, Colorado had failed to make it back to the Stanley Cup Final despite averaging over 50 regular-season wins in each of the past four seasons.
The Avalanche won their fourth Presidents’ Trophy last season with a 55-16-11 record, and will look for similar results this season with Sakic back in the GM role for the first time since their Cup victory in 2022.
